Default Sgt A. Wills, RNZAF 39030, 06/01/1940, missing

What caused the (presumed?) death of:

Sergeant Arthur Wills, RNZAF 39030, age 41, 06/01/1940, missing (Otago Provincial Memorial, New Zealand)

    And where was he lost?

Commemorated on this memorial are 31 Commonwealth soldiers of the Provincial District of Otago, buried at sea between New Zealand and Overseas Bases in the years 1914-1919, and 3 Commonwealth airmen of the 1939-1945 War who have no known grave.

    Thanks Amrit,

I'm hoping for confirmation by Errol Martyn; he learned me that much of the information on the Cenotaph Database is copied from his book, with as extra many mistakes added. That's why I don't trust the Cenotaph Database for 100% anymore.

    Cheers,

    Bart,

    From my Vol One:

    Sat 6 Jan 1940
    New Zealand
    Drowning accident
4 Technical Training Centre, RNZAF (Hillside, Dunedin)
During the afternoon got into difficulties in the surf at Smaill's beach, Dunedin, and drowned. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Provincial Memorial at Dunedin.
(Flight Mechanic - Instructor): A39030 Sgt Arthur WILLS, RNZAF - Age 41.
Wills had served four years with the RFC and RAF during the First World War.

Centotaph have his age and unit wrong. He was born 4 Oct 1898 and never served with 1EFTS, as far as is known.
