Default Night Fighter Encounter - Peenemunde 17/18 August 1943

    All,

I have a combat report titled "Report on Encounter with Enemy Aircraft ..." Report states that 51 squadron Halifax HR939 MH-R "proceeding on inward track" encountered a ME109 night fighter at 22.23 hrs, position 55.16N 09.00E, height 15,000 ft. Hits, by the rear gunner "were claimed to be seen entering the enemy aircraft but no damage observed."

Can anyone identify the night fighter and if it was damaged/losted?

    TIA

    Hi Rodger,

I had a look at both Martin Middlebrook's book and Theo Boiten NJWD book. Martin Middlebrook lists only one Me109 lost on this night from Stab 1./JG300 Me 109 18570 crashed near Siegen after an engine fire pilot name and fate unknown. Two Fw190 were also lost from II./JG300 Fw 190 410254 crashed while landing at Briest airfield near Brandenburg Fw Walter Schu killed and Fw190 530371 destroyed in a crashlanding at Burg near Magdeburg Lt Max Krawinkel wounded.

Theo Boiten on the other hand only lists two Me109 claimed by the bombers, one after a combat with a 1 Group Lancaster at 01.42 over Peenemunde and one south of Rugen Island at 01.46 after a prolonged combat with a 427 Sqn Halifax DK227.

I am not sure that has helped much but it was all I could find.

    Good luck,

    John.

FYI, in case you've not looked it up, those Combat Report co-ordinates are pretty much in the centre of Denmark, about 20 miles SE from Esbjerg.

    Doesn't necessarily help though! ...
