Default Frederick Hammersley RAF & King of Norway

    Hi,

    A real long shot here.

A friend of many years asked if I could help try to discover details about her grandfather. His name was Frederick Hammersley, he was a member of the RAF and post war awarded a medal from the then King of Norway. That is all we know. We do not know the medal or the circumstances. We are trying to obtain the service record.

    Pointers or suggestions most welcome.

    Kind regards

Do you know if the medal was a war medal awarded post war (or a post war medal)?

King Haakon VII Freedom Medal, cf.
    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/.../1723/data.pdf

    For information on the medal
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Ha..._Freedom_Medal
    http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haakon_VIIs_Frihetsmedalje (in Norwegian)

The Norwegian text says that 507 British persons got the medal, 204 Norwegians and an unknown of other foreign origin.

My best guess would be that he took part in operation DOOMSDAY from May 45, e.g. taking part in the return of the royal family.

Might be worth looking into the squadrons that took part in this operation.

    Mikkel,

    Belated thank you.

I am waiting for the details via the family. They have almost nothing, but what they have I will be viewing in a few weeks. I will let you know.

    Kind regards

Corporal F.G. Hammersley is recorded as being a member of No. 128 Wing - the medal being for services rendered in connection with the Liberation of Norway 1945.

    Hi Jim,

Thank you for this. Can I ask was No.128 Wing part of the 2nd TAF, also did they undertake photographic reconnaissance for 83 Group?

My knowledge is at best nil with this area of research.

    Regards

    Steve
