It was 4 pm when suddenly a gigantic bang sounded at the football field on the current Laarstraat at Fort 2 in Wommelgem. It soon turned out to be a V2 rocket. Because a football match among the British military had just started, the disaster was even greater. At the RAF's 14th Personnel Transit Center there were ten or eleven fatalities. An unknown number of deaths were among the spectators. Others were very badly injured.
After research, the following military victims could be identified, all are buried at the Schoonselhof in Antwerp.
James Frederick Handford
Raymond Kightley, 20 years old
Edwin McBriar, age 32
Owen Martin McColgan
Sidney George Sargeant, age 30
Thomas William Whitaker, 22 years old
Charles Ernest Turvey, 40 years old
Michael Lindsay, age 23
