Some questions and comments. Notwithstanding the availability Flight on line, hard-copy Aeroplane magazines are a necessity in this work. Several deaths involve officers of the RAFO and some may be Flying Club accidents (not sure how to resolve this). "Died" in most cases probably means just that - non-operational death from disease, age (many are retired), surgery. Help with respect to serials and circumstances welcomed.

On 6th November 1928 this aircraft took off from RAF Catterick at 10.15hrs for a flight that was set to be a thirty minute photographic flight over the Bellerby Ranges near Leyburn. The weather conditions over high ground on this date are said to have been poor the aircraft flew into this weather. When the aircraft failed to return to Catterick and nothing was heard of the two airmen a search was put into action at 14.30hrs that afternoon. An aircraft from Catterick was used to fly over the moorland in the area and dispite misty conditions F/Lt Hollinghurst spotted the crashed aircraft from the air between Wensleydale and Swaledale on Grinton Moor, he returned to land at Catterick and informed others of the location but they could not find the wreckage from the ground so F/Lt Hollinghurst took to the air again and guided the ground search party to the location. At 13.10hrs the site was found on the ground by F/O Lambie and P/O H.L.Piper from Catterick and both airmen were found to have been killed in the crash, their bodies were removed from the site and taken down to the Bolton Arms in Redmire where an inquest was held on 8th November 1928.

A little more on this one Hugh.

Tostevin was actually one of the two pilots who comprised the Duxford Meteorological Flight at the time. The accident occurred at 10 am whilst he was making the morning ascent. The accident was reported in The Times the following day. Email me off-board if you would like a copy.

23 Jan Dauncey Seems unlikely that he was killed in the Turcock as this a/c was not lost until 13 Feb. However The Times report of his death mentions ‘a single seat Blackburn’. I have not been able to find anything about the Turcock crash in The Times so it is possible that there was no fatality involved .

I have a few details:

COLLIN, William - the Tamworth Herald of February 18th: "The sudden death has occurred at Aldergrove, Northern Ireland, of Senior Technical Warrant Officer William Collin, of the Royal Air Force, who was well-known in Tamworth. He was attached to the 502nd Bombing Squadron at Aldergrove, and was a most efficient member of the Air Force, giving promise to a brilliant career. The funeral took place at Cove with full military honours."

REEVE, James Varney - the Bucks Herald of March 2nd: "Flying Officer Reeve, of Halton Camp, was fatally inured in a motor-cycle accident near Halton Turn, on the Aylesbury-Wendover road, about 1pm on Wednesday. So far as can be ascertained at the moment, no one saw the accident, Flying Officer Reeve being found by a passing motorist, lying in the road with a fractured skull."

MADOCKS, Kenrick Alexander Napier - the Dundee Courier reports "Kenneth Madocks" as being killed in a car accident involving the Queen's nephew, Viscount Rematon (son of the Earl of Ahtlone) in France. It states "Mr Kenneth Madocks was 22. He was in the Royal Air Force Reserve, and was studying mining engineering."
The Hull Daily Mail of April 16th reports that Viscount Trematon succumbed to his injuries, and describes Genneth [sic] Madocks as a friend of the Viscount, and the son of Brigadier-General W. R. N. Madocks. The accident occurred on the Paris-Lyons road, near Belleville-sur-Saone, when the car hit a tree and overturned.

ROBINS, Richard William Norman - the Western Morning News of October 9th reports that he committed suicide on the railway line near Elham Valley junction, Kent. He had joined the R.A.F. the Tuesday before his death.

SMITH, Ernest - the Western Daily Press of Noveber 14th reports that he committed suicide: "Flying Officer Ernest Smith, aged 42...was found dying in the coppersmith's shop [at cranwell]. he had taken cyanide of potassium. It was stated that Smith suffered from neurasthenia, and had influenza a few weeks ago."

23/01/1928 - DAUNCEY - Date should read 13/02/1928. Blackburn F.1 Turcock G-EBVP (allotted civil registration for test flying and speed trials). " Blackburn's Turcock fighter arrived at Martlesham Heath for testing in a civilian guise, as this beautifully streamlined biplane had not met with success in getting a place in the R.A.F. However, its makers, not wishing to abandon this design, looked for a foreign buyer and received some encouragement from Turkey. As the previous design had been named Lincock, it followed that this machine became the Turcock. Whilst carrying out speed trials on 13th February, 1928, Flying Officer Dauncy [sic], passed over the measured mile in one direction, followed at a greater speed in the opposite way, and then followed by a much faster run from the eastern end of the course. 1/ For the 1928 Hendon Air Display a new and effective demonstration was given by "diving past" the crowd in formation, the high pitched noise of the airscrew and Curtis [sic] engine at 220 m.p.h. sounding most impressive. In the following months the Squadron was much in demand for demonstrations to students at the Staff College, and to visiting V.I.P's. It was for the Sultan of Oman that the fastest and most impressive demonstration was given, but it seems it was overdone - because the tail fell off Flt. Lt. Somerville's [sic] aircraft, and he was killed, with his observer Cpl Loud.
