Default Working out enlistment data from service number

I'm currently researching Pilot Officer William Francis Shaw. Taken POW Aug '43 on account of his aircraft coming down in France, with the rest of the crew being killed.

He was commissioned in Feb 1943 but had previously served as a Flight Sergeant (Aircrew).

His service number as an NCO was 1164135

Is it possible to determine from that number a date range for his initial enlistment?

    Any help appreciated.

    welshraf, Hi,
    Welcome to the forum.
1164135 is in the block 1150001-1299800 issued Apr/May 1940 (locations not known). You might have to get his Service Record if you want the precise date.

Thanks for that as well as the welcome.

Despite the username I'm ex Army (although I did originally apply for an RAF Commission as a pilot, underwent selection at Cranwell but failed medical as arms were too short :-( )

Am also a medal collector. Have just been hit with the aircrew bug and picked up my first WW2 aircrew group and now finding all the research avenues - which appear numerous. I've quite a bit of a way with this one so far but one of the key bits I had missing was a rough period of enlistment.

The block can be broken down further

    1150001 1250000 99999 Apr-40 RAF: Cardington

The next block started issue at Cardington April 1941. The monthly intakes were approximately equal so you can make an estimate of entry month (give or take a month)

    Hello

I'm interested in P/O Shaw, as he came down in my research area, and was the only survivor from his Boston crew. Do you have any specific information about him ? As you say you are collecting medals, do you have acquired his ?
