    Default G/c a.v. Hammond

    Good afternoon,

Group Captain A.V. Hammond was OC Wittering in 1946. This officer appears in the Air Force List of October 45, but with no service number so research in LG becomes difficult. Does anyone know his first names?

    Thanks
    Phil

A well known artist too, if you Google him.

Hammond does not have a number shown because Group Captains and above, whilst retaining their number, did not have it used officially. You can always try looking for Hammond in an earlier rank. He was born on 21 July 2005 and commissioned into the RAF on 30 July 1925. His substantive promotion to Group Captain and his OBE were both dated 1 January 1946, I believe. He retired on 21 July 1955 and appeared in the Retired List in 1982 but how much longer he lived I do not know.

Malcolm's rafweb might have some useful info, particularly of Hammond was Cranwell trained.

    Colin/Phil

He was born in 1905 (there's a typo in your post, I think Colin!), and died in 1992 in Torbay, Devon.

He's mentioned in passing in Flight Magazine on April 8th 1937, page 355, in a list of those being promoted from Flight Lt to Squadron Leader.

    Hello,

Hammond's service number was, 16172 (that will open up a few more doors):

    And for Cranwell:

    Air Ministry, 1st September, 1925.
    ROYAL AIR FORCE.
    GENERAL DUTIES BRANCH.

The undermentioned Flight Cadets having successfully passed through the R.A.F. Cadet College, Cranwell, are granted permanent commissions as Pilot Officers, with effect from, and with seniority of, 31st July, 1925 :-

    Alfred Vavasour HAMMOND.
