DOWNEY, Frederick Benson Shearn, F/O - Died 27 February 1930 - his death was reorted in the recently digitised Chester-le-Street Chronicle, of March 7th 1930.

It reports that he died in the General Military Hospital Hinaidi, Iraq, due to typhoid fever. He had contracted it some six weeks prior to his death while on operations against the Wahibis. He had made a good recovery, and by February 22nd it was suggested he may be transferred to Alexandria by air ambulance, but between February 22nd and 27th his condition worsened and proved fatal.
He had attended Durham School, and took a mining course at Armstrong College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, before joining the D.L.I, in which he served for only a few months before transferring to the R.A.F.
