Default Details on the crew Halifax L9581

    Good afternoon,

Does anyone can give more details on the crew which ditched off Aberdeen returning form a mission against the Tirpitz on 30 Jan 42 (L9581 - 76 Sqn). The ORB and Chorley's are giving only the names, without the initials, and I'm trying to identify all of them. All survived the ditching.

    Sgt J.W.H. HARWOOD
    Sgt PATEY
    Sgt YOUNG
    Sgt SMARDON
    Sgt SCOTT
    Sgt ROCHE
    Sgt PETCH

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    TIA

    Phil

    Phil, Hi,

Walter Justin Smardon 1879303 DoB 29 Mar 1904 (AIR 78 p.914 – and the only male Smardon in the range Slade, J – Smith, Cyrus).

1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
3 Colseleigh Terrace Torquay Road Paignton, Paignton, Devon, England
Walter Smith Smardon Head Married Male 33 1878 Devon Brixham Railway Clerk
Justina Cristina Smardon Wife Married Female 39 1872 Devon Torquay -
Walter Justina Smardon Son - Male 7 1904 Devon Paignton –

SMARDON WALTER JUSTIN 1904 — 1904 Births & baptisms Totnes, Devon, England
SMARDON WALTER JUSTIN 1904 1987 1987 Deaths & burials Torbay, Devon, England
Smardon Walter Justina 1904 — 1911 Census Paignton, Totnes, Devon, England
SMARDON WALTER J — — 1935 Marriages & divorces Newton Abbot, Devon, England

All this is clearly the same bloke (except the Census middle name!!). BUT, BUT, BUT, the Air 78 Enlistment Number is in the block 1869809-1889800 Cardington May 43 which is a year after he goes into the Oggin off Aberdeen!

Something don’t fit? Name, or Number, typo? Or have I made a catastrophic boo-boo and chased wild geese up gum-trees?

    Hi Peter,
Thanks for this, however service number 1879303 can't be possible. At that time, the NCO service numbers in operational units had reach more or less 130000 range. The other problem is I don't have the ORB of 76 Sqn for most of 42 and nothing for the other years. Maybe these crewmen are reported later for other flights with their initials?

    Hello,
Sgt Petch is likely to be Reginald Herbert Petch 534832/(50189) Commissioned 12/10/42. His DFC is in Flightglobal dated 27th May 43 citing his Ops with 76 Squadron. He was posted as an instructor to 1663 HCU Rufforth from Linton on 9/3/43 and was posted out on 20/11/43 to 617 Squadron where I believe he evaded after Lancaster NF923 came to grief on a raid on the Dortmund-Ems Canal in on 24/9/44.
I can't see the names of the others mentioned in 1663's ORB.

    Rgds

    Pete
