Default Crash of 61 OTU Mustang III, 6 July, 1945, help please...

Information wanted please, re. the fatal crash of the above RAF Mustang.

What I have so far is : S/n FZ181, Mark III, 61 OTU, 6/7/45, broke up in a dive from 25,000 feet, Flt-Sgt Geoffrey John Clifton RAFVR abandoned the aircraft but his parachute canopy collapsed at about 8,000 feet and he died.

61 OTU had moved from Rednal to Keevil about 3 weeks before, so I presume the flight originated from the latter airfield, but can someone confirm this please ? The location of the crash would be useful too, and also the time.

Any information about the cause of the inflight break up and the failure of the parachute would be appreciated, too.

    Thanks in advance.

I have a note that there is an AIB report on this incident in AVIA 5/25. Air Britain records the site of the crash as Marston, Wiltshire.

    Ray,

I have a Cassini grid reference for this incident; VU401755 which translates to the modern 184/963549; Manor Farm, Marston, Devizes.
