Default 620 Squadron Stirling loss 7-8 May 1944?

    Dear all,

Who can help me with details of a 620 Squadron Stirling loss, on 7-8 May 1944? I would be especially interested in the serial number of the aircraft, crash location and fate of its crew. I've been informed that the Stirling was engaged in an SOE mission 'Messenger 2' to France.

    Cheers and thanks, Theo

    Hi Theo,

You can download a list of allied Aircraft lost on Special duty operations on the wesite of Carpetbagger Aviation Museum: http://harringtonmuseum.org.uk/Carpe...umHomePage.htm
You find the list at the bottom of page. It includes the information you are looking for.

    Cheers,
    Peter

    Theo

The Carpetbagger website has a query on the serial number - LJ886 or LJ866. In the book 'Stirlings in Action with the Airborne Forces' by Dr. Dennis J. Williams states that the serial is LJ866. However, the copy of Air Britain's 'The Stirling File' I have states LJ886 was the Stirling lost, with LJ866 SOC in 1945...???

The Carpetbagger website also says the Stirling was attacked by a Do-217 - do you have any further details Theo?

    Regards

    Simon

    Hi Simon,

    Here's the NJ claim:

    Oblt. Karl-Heinz Schäffer: 5 6./NJG4 Stirling 10 km. S. Charolles (LJ 55): 500 m. 01.02 620 Sqn Stirling LJ886

The Do217 was shot down in return fire, Schäffer and his crew escaping with injuries.

    Cheers, Theo

    Thank you Theo

Do you have an ID for the Do-217 flown by Oblt. Schäffer?

    Hello Simon,

The Do217 was a Do 217 N-1, serial nr. 51414, no individual a/c code known.
