Hello,
Further details on the loss of No.1654 HCU Lancaster I ME440, and No.1669 HCU Lancaster III PB570, on 5-2-1945, can be found here:
http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...-William-Burns
What is not mentioned, is the fact that the rear gunner aboard Lancaster PB570, 39-year-old, 1899507 Sgt Eric Durham KEELING RAFVR, was an Australian, originally from New South Wales.

Sgt Eric Keeling, my father, was in fact the mid-upper gunner on Lancaster PB570. I have a letter he wrote dated 22-1-45 describing a flight over Scotland and the Irish Sea from 20,000ft. The panorama was outstanding but the cold terrible (-46deg), with a spasmodically working heated suit. He says "the poor lad in the rear turret had his eyes frozen up".
He had come to England to join his brother in law developing housing in Totteridge but became an officer in the AFS throughout the blitz, joining RAF Bomber Command in Dec. 1943.
Victor Crawford Parker 179593 died when Spitfire VB 499 crashed at Bone airfield
Harry Bedford 1055540 , was hit by a vehicle 1 mile from Reykjavik on the Hafnarfjorfur road at 03:00 hours dying of his injuries at 15:05 hours
James MacGillivray Burdon was my uncle. My mother always said that his plane was struck by lightning. I assume that this info came from RAF officials. That does not seem plausible given that the incident occurred in February. I am curious what information there is to suggest that he was involved in this incident resulting in the aircraft breaking up in the clouds. Any information would be helpful. Regards, Scott Oliphant
