Robert Barnes 1637114 , attached to 353 MU was travelling in a vehicle along with LAC Wiles in which they had been given a lift in from Cerigola back to camp. At 21:00 hours as the vehicle was on a low lying bridge near Carapelle, it stalled. A civillian lorry attempted to tow it off but the water rose very rapidly over the bridge, overturning it, then sweeping it away. All the occupants except Barnes made it to safety but he was a non swimmer and nothing was seen of him. On 21 February , a signal was received from RAF SIB that a body had been recovered from a river near Foggia and it was identified as Barnes at Number 4 RAF Hospital on 22 February
