Default Fighter interceptor unit aircraft code letters

    Hi,
Does anyone know the single letter codes for this specialized fighter unit? I think the unit was made up of 12 aircraft? The Squadron code was 'ZQ', and one of the pilots who flew in the unit, Joseph Berry, his aircraft had the letter 'Y'. Any info concerning any other aircraft would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards, Don

Flying Training and Support Units (Air Britain) gives a long list of aircraft for the Fighter Interception Unit, known as the Fighter Interception Development Unit from 4.9.44. Examples with codes are Hurricane L1592 ZQ.U, Beaufighter R2125 XQ.V, Mosquito HK748 ZQ-G, Welkin DX286 ZQ.X, Tempest EJ542 ZQ.A2, Boston AE461 ZQ.A. It certainly had more than 10 aircraft in its later incarnation., with nine each of tempests and Mustangs.

    Hi Don
My father flew tempests in FIU in Joe Berry's time and so I have information from his log book re the various aircraft he flew. Also I could put you in touch ( with his permission) with Graham Berry who has researched this extensively.
    regards , Colin
