Default WWII map co-ordinates (North of Berlin)

Can anyone provide me with a copy of, or can point me in the direction of, a large scale WWII period map of the area to the north of Berlin. I have been able to find maps of specific areas within Berlin but not one of the area to the north. Google Earth provides a 1953 version, but I am endeavouring to find an earlier version if possible.

Your usual help would be much appreciated

    Regards

    Pete

    Hello Pete,

Here you find a treasure of links to original maps in big solution. Some of them very "large files" to download.

Below you find a War Map (Air) covering Berlin up to Baltic Sea. Very large file.

I've just found a more complete index to German maps in size 1:100 000.

I am just extending this thread a bit as I am puzzling over some co-ordinates provided by the Air Historical Branch.

They have provided N53 Z86 as the area north of Berlin but I can't work out what map system used those references.

    Any thoughts?

    Regards

    Hello Pete

Probably from the 1:250,000 series GSGS 4346 map series, sheet N53 "Berlin" with Z86 being a 10Km by 10Km grid just north of Berlin.

The following link should take you to the relevant map. http://igrek.amzp.pl/mapindex.php?cat=ALLIED250CE

    Kind regards
    Pierre

    Thanks Pierre

I have now fathomed out (albeit slowly) that N53 = Map Reference and that the 8 part of Z86 is the western side of the square and the 6 the southern side.

Could you advise on how Z fits into the equation

    Regards

    Pete

    Hi Pete

As you can see the grid numbers are in blue. This is also relevant to the way the grid is broken into 10 x 10 km squares. If you look bottom left you should see that there is a blue box with letters in. The first letter is ignored for the purposes of the grid but you can see the letter rZ appearing. On the left side of the map you can see box Z starts as another letter rE ends below it.

Hope this is clearer than mud!

    Kind regards
    Pierre
