    Default 104 Sqd Operations

Please can anyone help with any information regarding a Wellington that was lost on the 1/2/12/43 during a raid to Pontassieve serving with 104 Sqd .

possibly coded EP-Z , Pilot was also possibly Sgt Howarth or F/O Johnston .

    Thanks

    Hi Phill

I can find a F/O Robert Winn Johnson, 125525 - RAFVR from 104 Sqn on Malta Memorial, Malta. He died 02/12/1943.

    Phill,

    Re: my email.

Here is what happened to Johnson:

On return (from attacking Pontassieve), an aircraft of No.104 Squadron was set on fire by the accidental discharge of a verey cartridge, and all the crew except the pilot baled out near Ferryville - the aircraft was never found.

See: Bombers over Sand and Snow/Granfield. pp.224-5.

Hi Phill,an elderly friend of mine,David Cockram's older brother was on this Wellington and baled out.His name was F/Sgt Charles Havill Cockram.sadly he was killed later in the war with 37sq,I am currently looking into getting a replacement (although not sure if he ever applied for or had an original) Caterpillar Club badge for David along with Bomber Command Clasp, although this hinges on one op he did with 21 OTU,the lovely people at MoD saying the other 37 ops he did were not technically with Bomber Command as the squadrons were based outside the UK! Just wondered what your interest in this Wellington was? Maybe we can help each other? All the best,Laurence.

    Hello Lancaster ME737,

    Welcome to the Forum.

Whilst we are awaiting a reply from Phill, can you tell us; do you have the full crew of No.104 Sqn Wellington X HE827, abandoned on 2-12-1943? Posting them here on the Forum would be of interest to others members (including me!).

Full details of the loss of 1852449 F/Sgt (Air Gnr.) Charles Havill COCKRAM RAFVR, are available, if required.
