    Hi Finn and Henk

The thread you are looking for is http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/d...D6&archive=yes it's under Finn's other I/D. Some concerns the loss of a Calshot Seaplane Tender, Henk's man may have been part of the crew all but 2 of whom were lost plus a Senior Naval Officer. Some of the bodies were washed ashore

    Regards

    Dick

Thanks Finn and Dick for this very helpful info. Because ST243 was RAF it's also possible that F/O G.H. Stephens, P/O F.E. Byerley and Cpl R.C. Lawson (all three on the Runnymede Memorial) were on same motor boat (refer to other thread 'unaccounted' airmen 2-6-1940).

    Hello Henk and Dick,

Thanks for finding the thread. This is what I can find about 3 more unaccounted airmen. One of them, also RAF Calshot.

    F/0 George H. Stephens, 37895, St. Eval

    P/O Frank E. Byerly, 77469, St. Eval

Cpl Roy C. Lawson, 521169, RAF Calshot

    Hi Henk

The book from which I took my original information was a Royal Navy report on Operation Dynamo written later in the war and published in 2000 as The Evacuation from Dunkirk edited by W J R Gardner. It mentions (without dates) the additional loss by the RAF of ST254 and another craft identified as AMC3. I would not think that a Seaplane Tender would have had 3 Officers as part of the crew and in the narrative it gives for ST243 the name of P/O C Collings apparently as Captain along with the passenger Cdr J C Clouston RN both of whom died(in CWGC) although it says that 1 Officer and 1 crewman were rescued.Clouston was the Harbourmaster at Dunkirk and was being taken back to the port by the RAF after consultation at HQ in Dover when ST243 was sunk by air attack off Gravelines.

    Regards

    Hi Henk

Following from Finn's 2nd post Lawson looks a likely candidate for coxswain of one of the 3 lost RAF craft and his DoD coincides with the known loss of ST243

Looking the two airmen recorded as St. Eval give this possible loss.

HOBSON, Robert Arthur Douglas - Lac - 528329 - the inquest into his death was reported in the Bucks Herald of June 14th 1940. Alex,

    STEVENSON, James Walter Bryan (Australian) - P/O - 42158 - RAF.
    Spitfire Ia - N3179 - 266 Sqn.
    >> AIR 81/747 at http://discovery.nationalarchives.go...ls/r/C14502631 does indeed say N3179. However, I think this was lost on 3 May 1940 in a landing accident, and N3197 is the correct serial.

    Hello Andy,
Not sure , I had N3179 written down, but see now that FCL vol 1(revised) has N3169. So I may have copied N3169 down incorrectly.

Just looked at it in the Spitfire production lists and that has P3197 as shot down on the 5th June over Dunkirk.

    N3197 Ia 438 EA MIII FF 27-11-39 8MU 2-12-39 266S 15-2-40 Shot down by Bf109s over Dunkerque 5-6-40 FH71.00

    Default Re: 400602 - Unaccounted - Airmen - 02-06-1940

    Alex,
    N3169 survived to become 2843M in Dec41.
BoF doesn't record any losses for 266 Sqn on 5Jun40, and neither does the 266 Sqn summary of events at: http://discovery.nationalarchives.go...ils/r/D8398170
The 266 Sqn ORB at: http://discovery.nationalarchives.go...ils/r/D8398171 confirms that Stevenson was flying N3197 when lost on 2Jun40. The summary of events also confirms the date.
A little more detail is at: https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/228811
I therefore contend that there is an error in the Spitfire production list.
    Regards,
    Andy

Just to close the loop on this, the author of the Spitfire production list has corrected the date of the loss of N3197 to 2Jun40:
