    Default Cpl Ralph Elgey 937948 - Jan 31st 1943?

    Hello everyone

I have the above Corporal in my list of local casualties, who died on January 31st 1943 at the Lawson Memorial Hospital, Golspie, Highland due to injuries he received in an aeroplane crash some 3 or so days before.

Can ayone provide any details of the accident involved around 27-28 January 1943?

    Many thanks.

    Regards

    Simon

The aircraft was from No.8 AGS at Evanton, below are two entries from their Operations Record Book which refer to the accident involving Lysander T1585 on the 28th.

January 28th 1943, “A Lysander crashed at Dornoch and the pilot was killed instantly the Drogue Operator suffered from generalised bruising fractured humerus, fractures lumbar spine and fracture of both calcanei. He was badly shocked and subsequently developed gasgangrine in the arm where he had a deep lacerated wound. He died on the 31st January, 1943.”

January 31st 1943, “There were two flying accidents during the month, one of a very minor character, the other a Lysander T.1585, 3 miles North of Dornoch in which Sgt Dylewski, S (P.781193) – Polish was instantaneously killed. L.A.C. Elgey, R. 937948, the Drogue Operator was seriously injured and died on 31.1.43.”
