    Default Commanding Officers

    Hello List,
Is there anyone who knows where to find lists of Squadron Commanding Officers for ww11. I am particularly interested in 95 Squadron. I have a quite a few but I'm sure there are omissions. Any help much appreciated

    Hello Col,
I have just received some ORBís for 95 squadron (not complete by any means) and have found an addition to your list. The c/o who signed the ORBs for Feb 1945 was one S.G.Baggott. Donít have any firm date, but he was flying with the squadron on the 12th. Also S/L D.M.Gall DFC assumed command of 95 on 25th June 1945.
    Regards and thanks again,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

The listing l posted was sourced from the late John Rawling's - Coastal, Support and Special Squadrons of the RAF and their Aircraft. pp.96-7. A few of the other CO lists in the said volume have been found wanting, as well.

l was aware that Gall served on 95 Squadron, Chaz Bowyer mentions the fact in his Short Sunderland book (p.127), but gives no details. Gall wouldn't have had time to warm his seat as CO, the squadron disbanded on 30 June 1945! Baggott (then a F/O), actually flew No.95 Squadron's first operational sortie, on 24 March, 1941 (Sunderland N9050 'D').

    Hi Col,
Thanks for reply. The C D Mitchell quoted by Rawlings could also be incorrect- there is a c/o in April 44 C G Marshall. (Later DFC AFC)
Who was it said "Time and research move on but published accounts remain pickled in aspic."
    regards Mike

    Mike,

Too true! Regarding W/C D Mitchell. That was an error on my part. l believe the officer is in fact, 33008 W/C Douglas MICHELL twice MiD, RAF.

    Dear Mike
'5 Group - Bomber Command' 'An operational Record' by Chris Ward gives a good selection of Commanding Officers for various squadrons. There may be other books by the same author that cover many other squadrons.
    Best wishes

Chris Ward has also done 3,4 & 6 Groups. Lists of COs also in The Bomber Command Handbook, and the sister volume to the book Col mentioned 'Fighter Squadrons of the RAF'.
