Default Help re DSO for Charles Louis Roman DFC

    Dear all,

Can anyone confirm that Charles Louis Roman was awarded a DSO.

I am unable to find a gazette entry for it although several websites state that he received a DSO.
    Kind regards
    Gerry

    Hi Colin
    Thanks for your reply.
I can't find a DSO either but several sites quote him as having one.
    Kind regards

If you want to take this further, it would be interesting to determine which source first mentioned the DSO and in what context. It's possible that subsequent references merely took the original as gospel.

Any photos, records of service etc?

    Hi Colin,
I suspect that is exactly what has happened.
I have found no official evidence of the award.
Heaven only knows the original source.

    Hello,

    Air Ministry N C6531/40/AFL2/4998 22/07/1944

    DSO citation:

" This Officer has displayed a high standard of skill and leadership throughout the many varied sorties in which he has participated. Whilst operating from Malta, S/Ldr Roman led his flight in many offensive sweeps over the Greek coast. Seaplane bases were attacked succesfully without los and many seaplanes, motor boats and other small craft were destroyed in addition to aircraft in the air. In March 1944 when operating from Alghero, Squadron Leader Roman led an attack against a heavely armed German vessel: a gun position on the stern was destroyed thereby enabeling other aircraft to deliver an attack which resulted in the vessel being beached. Some days later, S/Ldr Roman led a similar attack against two vessels in the harbor of Port De Bonc. On this occasion both vessels were severly damaged. S/Ldr Roman has rendered most valuable service."

    Kind regards,

    Serge

    Cheers Serge,
I still can't find it in the London Gazette.
Do you have a copy of the entry that you would be willing to share?

    Many thanks once again

    Hello Gerry,

Except the DFC of Gerard Greindl who flew with the SAAF (that I know) , you shouldn't find any other DSO, DFC or other British awards awarded to a Belgian member of the RAF during WW2 in the London Gazette. I Think this was to protect their relatives living in occupied Belgium. The references that I have are from the CDH (Centre Documentation Historique) at Evere. You can find the original awards of Charles Roman at the Museum "First Wing Historical Center" - The Golden Falcon in Beauvechain, Belgium. http://musee.1wing.free.fr/index.htm

    Kind regards,

    Serge
