Default Identifying which No 3 Group HCU

I'm researching a Stirling pilot (later Halifaxes) who according to his service records was at 12 OTU March-May 1944, and then HCU at 31 Base (Stradishall).

My main question is, how should I proceed in order to identify which HCU? Googling around the possibilities suggests 1651, 1653 or 1657 as they flew Stirlings but in all honesty I'm stumped and would welcome any direction on where to look next.

I have an additional query: his next movements after HCU were to 304 FTU and then about three weeks later to 624 (SD) Sqdn in North Africa - would this be enough evidence to assume he and his crew flew a Stirling out to 624 Sqdn from what I take to be 304 Ferry Training Unit at Melton Mowbray? Or is that an extrapolation too far?

As ever, I'm grateful for any advice or guidance. Pat.
