    Default Avro 504 AX871

    Hi guys

I have a note that Avro 504 AX871 was 'operational' sometime in 1940 and was with a Special Duties Flight. Apparently it crashed at Hawkinge with Plt Off P.B. Newsom-Davis at the controls, and two airmen as passengers. No injuries.

    What was this all about?

    Cheers
    Brian

I think the Avro was used for Radar Calibration

AX871 hit a hedge taking off from Hawkinge on 1 August 1940.

I would have thought that operating a 504 in what was the front line of battle was probably unwise - but there you have it!!

Later Wing Commander Peter Brian Newsom Davis DSO; killed 19.9.44 when shot down at Arnhem in Stirling EF319.
He was a well-known glider pilot at Dunstable before the war, hence his involvement with the Special Duties Flight.
