    Hello,

Some information on No.1 P/O KJ Peirpoint 120515 that might be of some interest, Middleton-on-Sea Sussex has come up as a possible location, his death registered in Chichester. His sister who died 31.05.2012 a Miss Kathleen Mary Pierpoint left the majority of her estate to the RNLI & a lifeboat (Shannon Class) in his honour is to be named 'RNLB Kenneth James Pierpoint' to be launched spring 2016 at Fleetwood Lancs.

    Regards,

P/O Pierpoint was the sole casualty on Boston AL463 of No.602 Squadron.

Looking at it again I think so as well Col,

F1180 marked as 602 but 605 is more likely.

AB has this aircraft as lost on Ops with 605 2/8/42 but the F1180 has a better match of detail and casualty for the recorded serial of AL463.

    Hello

    Regarding number 5. W/O(WoP/A/G)Harry CROOK (31) 1001120 503Sqn 09.05.44

As Peter points out his death was registered in the Bodmin district.

His loss is in the London Times Roll of Honour - Royal Air Force, Monday 31 July 1944 edition under "Killed in Action" and it says "in action are due to flying operations against the enemy" and the name appears as "Crook, Wt. Off. H. R."

His full name is Harry Robert Crook and a check of AIR 78/40 confirms that name with Service Number as 1001120.

The reference to 503 Squadron by CWGC must be wrong at the time of his death, according to the MoD online and the book RAF Squadrons by W/Cdr Jefford (Ret'd), 503 Squadron was disbanded before WW2 in 1938.

Made enquiries with the Cemetery contact number who hold the Burial Register to see if further details could be gleaned about Harry Robert Crook. The Register apparently omits any reference to Squadron, or other detail such as RAF Station, Undertaker, place found/ or where died, only his full name, that burial was on 13 May 1944, he was aged 31, an RAF WO, grave 139, but with a Service Number 1001121 (1001121 must be an error). Also, the grave being a Service grave.

Ufortunately, the holder of the Burial Registers has had a fire some years ago and any files which once accompanied the Register of some of the burials have been burnt.

It is not RAF 503 Sqn in 1944. The AHB should have Casualty details and be able to confirm brief info?

Could it be 53 Squadron at St Eval? St Eval is in the Bodmin registration district (as is St Merryn).

    Hello

CROOK is not listed in the casualties of No. 53 Squadron, in "United in effort" by Jock Manson, who records a ground crew (D.L. COLEMAN being killed in a ground accident at St Eval on 15th May 1944, and died of his injuries the next day. I think he would have spotted CROOK.

Default Harry Robert Crook 9 May 1944, 503 Squadron?

    Hello

Regarding W/O Harry Robert Crook RAF 1001120, registered in the Bodmin District and this reference by CWGC to 503 Sqdn. The RAF 503 Squadron had already been disbanded before WW2 it seems. There is no 503 in AIR 27 for 1944 either.

However, looking at the British Newspaper Archive, I note a reference on 10 May 1944 to a Combined Op yesterday involving the 9th US Air Force yesterday. Also another report mentions the 8th & 9th US Air Force flying Ops from England.

The US Air Force is totally out of my jurisdiction, but the US had their 503rd Fighter Squadron based here. The 339th Fighter Group was based at Fowlmere and I wondered (just wondered), if W/O Crook RAF has been killed in an allied/US incident, which the 503rd Fighter Squadron based here, had either claimed, or had to report, hence the reference to 503 Sqdn? Of course it could be just an error by CWGC?

    Regards Mark
