Default F/O Donald Mervyn EASTMAN (J/42135) RCAF Killed 1945-06-09 Aircraft serial correction

Flying Officer Donald Mervyn EASTMAN (J/42135) RCAF Killed 1945-06-09 Serial Correction

Circumstances of Death: Lost in aircraft Spitfire RM840 (wrong) should be NH840,

Crashed while doing aerobatics, possibly due to structural failure

    Death of Death 1945-06-09

    Served in 83 GSU

Burial/Commemoration Details : Panel 2. at Woking (St. John's) Crematoriu, United Kingdom (Map)

More Details: SON OF MR. AND MRS. J. M. EASTMAN, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA.

I have been sent an email privatley that points out

The Spitfire quoted on RAFCommands for Flt Lt Eastman RCAF (RM840) seems suspect. A local historian instead quotes NH840, from Dunsfold, as hitting a wire trailed from a Hoverfly at Beaullieu and crashing "behind the Waggon & Horses pub in Walhampton on the eastern edge of Lymington." It also notes that NH840 went to 83 GSU on 6May45.

This therefore contrasts with "crashed whilst doing aerobatics, possibly due to structural failure" which is quoted on the AllSpifirePilots website, which has the accepted history of RM840 as 39MU 5-10-44 222MU 17-2-45 Defender 8-3-45 India 6-4-45 ACSEA 9-7-46 SOC 28-11-46" which obviously conflicts with it crashing in England in Jun45. RM840 is widely quoted on RCAF sites. Might you be able to take this correction up?

His R.C.A.F. Service File has the Court of Enquiry on the accident, in which it records that he flew Spitfire XIV NH840 under R4B KK978 which was flying at 5,000 feet and trailing an aluminium dummy sea marker on a length of hemp rope some 200 feet long. The line carrying the sea marker was seen to break as he flew under the helicopter. The Spitfire was next seen in a power dive flying north to south over Lymington, and an object was seen to detach itself from the aircraft at around 300 feet before it struck the ground, fatally injuring the pilot.

The opinion of the court was that the accident was caused by the aircraft striking the aluminium sea marker.

The exact location of the crash is given as Walhampton Cottage, Pierside Road, Lymington, Hants.

The inquiry noted that an Air Ministry signal stating that no aircraft should fly within 500 yards of the helicopter had not been distributed to 83 G.S.U. due to an apparent administrative error by an L.A.C.W., and no blame was attached on the part of the pilot.
