    Default B R W Betts 300305

I have found a RAF reserve officer with serial number 3003xx. He relinquished his commission in 1954. Approximately when he could join the RAF?
    TIA

Have you found his commishioning in the London Gazette, does it list his NCO serial number?

These lists in this thread refer only to NCO numbers.

I tried searching for number between 300300 and 300399 but they only seemed to be Army numbers during the war. Is your man Polish maybe? can you give us his serial number.

Oh, in haste I did not notice those are NCO numbers! The man was an officer, but I have not found anything prior to 1953. He was a Briton, Flying Officer, 300305.

His 1947 RAC aero license calls him 'Qualified Service Pilot"

So maybe he was a wartime Sgt pilot and became officer in post war in the RAFO.

Oh, there is more on the airline, which is quite elusive anyway. The other person mentioned is Olive Barbara Betts, I presume his wife. Reputedly he also had a sister, who married an airman. Betts may have moved to Carribbean. I cannot trace them.

I have ancestry.com and that might explain why I didn't find him in a death entry or maybe he is still alive.

Not sure if you are still interested, but I have found Basil Betts 300305 RAF fighter pilot for you.

I am a pilot on a layover here in St Lucia and just went for lunch to the Cockpit bar which is part of the Harmony suites here in Rodney Bay. In the bar there were several photos on the wall showing the wartime career of an RAF pilot flying Tiger moths, Harvards then Hurricanes and Typhoons. There were also some paintings depicting wartime scenes and aircraft. Being the nosey pilot that I am I tried to see if I could find out why and I noticed by the entrance a photo and caption reading Squadron Captain BRW Betts founder of the Harmony suites.
On returning to my room I tried to look him up and found your query on here. Hope that solves your mystery. Looks like he had a pretty interesting flying career and it seems his family still run the hotel. Do you need me to try and "photo the photos" before I fly home next week?
    All the best
    Steve

Just as a matter of interest, has anybody managed to dig him out of the LG? He was born early 1923 (Births Q1 1923 Betts Basil R W Smyth Bromley 2a 958) so he is unlikely to have joined before early 1941? I can't find him on the LG under either '300305', or 'Betts'!!

    Hi Peter,

You are using a time expired set of met chicken entrails - get a fresh batch of the admin version.

Basil Robert William Betts RAFO F/O entry

    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/.../5573/data.pdf

The slip in AIR 78 is a bit hard to read but I think his OR number was 1385986 (the 8 in his last three may be suspect in my version)

    Regards
    Ross
