    Alian,

The AM Form 1180 records that the "Flaps failed to lower fully, a/c stalled from 30ft, destroyed by fire at around 15:00 hours. Pilot Officer H.G Pilling had flown 152 hours solo on type, and a further 155 hour "other".

    Alain,

From Volume One of my 'For Your Tomorrow':

    Tue 19/Wed 20 May 1942
    Bomber Command
    Raid on Mannheim, Germany (by 197 aircraft - 11 lost) . . .

7 Squadron, RAF (Oakington, Cambridgeshire - 3 Group)
Stirling I W7520/S - took off at 2258 on same raid as the above and collided with an enemy night-fighter, both crashing near Brustem, 3km SE of St Trond. Both crews died, the seven from the Stirling being buried on the airfield at St Trond, but later reinterred at Heverlee, near Louvain.
Captain: 65540 Flt Lt Hector Garrick PILLING, DFC, RAF - Age 29.
Pilling is believed to have been born in Fiji but he lived in New Zealand during at least 1926-1927 and 1929-1930.

    Amendment noted in VolumeThree:
Crashed at No. 14 Brustrem-Dorp (a street). Pilling was a member of the RAFVR, not RAF.

    And bio info:
PILLING, Flight Lieutenant Hector Garrick, DFC.

    Alain,

Many thanks for offering but I've no need for the nightfighter info. I'm working on WWI bios these days!
