    Default Beaufort L8983 on 10 June 1942

    Hello,

In the late afternoon of 10 June 1942, nine Beauforts of 217 Sqn RAF flying from Gibraltar to Malat where they were attacked by a fighter identified as a Bf 109. Shores in his book "Malta: the Spitfire year" said it was probably a Mc 202 of 54° Stormo CT from Pantelleria, but the more recent Jagdverbande books by Prien show that one German pilot, Oblt Günther Hess of 6./JG 53, claimed a Beaufort shot down at 1840 hrs that day, so the attacker was probably a Bf 109 after all.

No Beaufort was shot down, but one, serial L8983, was damaged and one crew, Sgt Denis Norman, the air gunner, was killed. The pilot was obliged to force-land on arrival at Luqa.

    I have two questions:
    1) can somebody give the crew list for Beaufort L8983 this day ? I don't know how well the ORB was kept during this period.
    2) I would like to know if L8983 was later repaired or not ? It may have been damaged beyond repair, or destroyed by an Axis raid before being repaired.

    Thanks in advance

Laurent, can you check the serial number as L8983 isn't a Beaufort serial - perhaps L9883?

    Regards

You're right, the serial L8983 came from the book "Malta the spitfire year", but is obviously wrong.

According to http://www.rafweb.org/Members%20Page...al%20Units.htm, the Beaufort L9883 and L9893 both belonged to 217 Sqn at one time.

L9893 was shot down by Flak during an attack on a convoy off Greece on 3 July 1942, and L9883 was SOC in August 1944 according to a forum entry found in Google.

I have checked in the National Archives Catalogue, and the ORB of 217 Sqn RAF has only a summary of event from April to December 1942, with no record of events. So I doubt that the crew and serial of the aircraft involved on 10 June 1942 will be found there.

    Hi Laurent,

I've the ORB of 217 Sqdn, but unfortunately nothing is mentioned about the incident. Perhaps anything may have been mentioned in the Station ORB of Luqa (if this is/was kept)?

    Regards,
    Hans

    HI Laurent

L9883 was MW-E with 217 and later served with 42 Sqn and 9 OTU, SOC 24.8.44.

    Source Air Britain Beaufort File

The better news though from "The Last Torpedo Flyers" by Arthur Aldridge (217 pilot), Simon and Schuster 2013, a recommended read..............crew were Sergeant Jimmy Hutchinson, pilot; Freddie Moore Navigator; Sergeant Henry Parry gunner and Sergeant Dennis Norman WOP.
Dennis Norman was killed by a single bullet through the heart while sat at his radio and nobody realised he had been killed until arrival in Malta, so presumably very little damage to the aircraft.
Henry Parry in the turret 'drove the 109 away after three attacks '

Arthur Aldridge was flying another of the Beauforts that day

    regards Peter

    Hello,

    Take a look here:

    http://www.rafcommands.com/archive/01869.php

Would it be unreasonable to suggest that HUTCHESON, was the pilot of Beaufort L9893, on 10th June, 1942?

    Col.
