Default DFM Citation for Sgt Claude Harry Haywood RAF 549957

    Hi All,

Could anyone provide any details on what action the above airman was awarded the DFM for (LG 21.11.41) Flight Global Archive mentions him also on (4.12.1941) as serving with 9 Squadron, which would be Wellingtons from Bardney.

Via Ian Tavender’s : The Distinguished Flying Medal Register for the Second World War : -

HAYWOOD, Claude Henry 549957 Sergeant No. 9 Squadron
    L.G. 21/11/1941 : Sorties 30, Flying hours 169.05 : Air Gunner Air2/9334

This N.C.O. has been employed on flying duties with this unit since February 1941 and has completed 30 major operations against the enemy. On at least two occasions when his aircraft was being attacked, he has shown exemplary alertness and courage. On the night of 9th. May 1941, while attacking Mannheim and the night of 11th. May 1941, while over the target at Hamburg, an Me 110 opened fire at close range but quick action on the part of Sergeant Haywood made the attack abortive. He eventually drove off the enemy aircraft. Furthermore, on both occasions, skilful directions given to his pilot enabled the aircraft to avoid being hit. His outstanding keenness to engage and destroy the enemy and complete disregard for his personal safety and his efficiency and enthusiasm on all occasions have been an inspiration to his comrades. The Intelligence Officer has often commented on the clearness and accuracy of Sgt. Haywood’s reports when being interrogated. He is strongly recommended for the award of the D.F.M.

    Thank you Douglas,

    That`s a great help!

Don`t know why I couldn`t find any mention in the online LG for this man, apart from one line saying he got the DFC.
