    Default Delta Defence Flight 1942-43

    Hi guys

I've seen reference to the above unit but know very little about it. I believe it may have been an offshoot of 103 MU and 94 Squadron flying Spitfire Vs. Two of its pilots shot down a Ju88 of 2.(F)/123 on 20 December 1942. But that's about all I know.

Hope someone can enlighten me, please?

    Cheers
    Brian

brieff mention of it in an old thread:

See sticky note about the old forum for making this easier to read.

    Hello Brian,

I am not sure of the formation date of the Delta Defence Flight but probably around early to mid summer of 1942. F/Lt Richard Webb served with it and with Sgt Ross they shot down an Italian tri-motor bomber 70 miles West of Cairo on September 3, 1942.
By at least the second week in October the Flight was at Shandur operating four Spitfire Vs and from November 30 moved to El Gamil, the then base of 94 sqdn. It is not clear whether the flight continued to use its Delta Defence Flight title from then on. However the Spitfires and pilots were not absorbed by 94 sqdn but operated alongside with 94s Hurricanes hanging about under the Spitfires for any morsels that came their way none did.
By January 1943 the Spitfire pilots were posted to other units and the aircraft removed from 94s care.

    Thanks for that, Ian

I expect you are aware that Webb also shared a Ju88 on 20 December 1942. Any idea of the other pilot?

A bit of a mystery unit!

    Cheers

    Hello Brian,

It was the New Zealander F/O Montague J Rowland.

Note that F/L Richard Webb was also a New Zealander, and like Rowland, a member of the RNZAF. See Errol Martyn's For Your Tomorrow, Vol 3, Page 419 for bio of Rowland, page 499 for bio of Webb.
