    Hi Tom
This thread is a long time ago ... so I am hoping you/someone else involved can assist. The younger brother of the Rear Gunner on ME452 is my close friend and we have been trying to establish exactly where it crashed. The RG told him that it was in/near Harburg. I appreciate this is now a suburb of Hamburg. Do you have any information on the crash site? Many thanks, Julie

    Hi Julie,

According to Chorley’s Bomber Command Losses the aircraft crashed at Freisdorf, 17 kms west of Bremervorde. Rod who also answered this request may have more detailed information on the crash location.

    Cheers,

    John.

I can only quote what various German documents record as the crash site of ME452:

    1. 22.10 Uhr, bei Frelsdorf über Beverstedt (Kreis Wesermünde)

    2. 22.30 Uhr, b. Frelsdorf, Kr. Wesermünde, 20 km W. Wesermünde

    3. 22.30 Uhr, Frelsdorf 20 km W. Wesermünde BS 6 ["BS 6" is a Luftwaffe map grid reference; a square centred at roughly 53 37 30 N, 08 55 00 E. Frelsdorf is some 15 kilometres south of this spot]

The document under 1.) above states Gedge, Picton, Heron, and Howe were buried in the Standortfriedhof Wesermünde-Geestemünde on 15 March 1945.

Another document states Johnson was captured by Police in Ohlerstedt bei Hambergen, Kreis Osterholz-Scharmneck at 11 o'clock [presumably AM] on 9 March 1945. There is nothing about the capture of Kennedy or Hughes.

In looking again at the document given in 1.) above, it gives the crash location as near Frelsdorf over Beverstedt. Beverstedt is some 8 kilometres south-west of Frelsdorf. Ohlerstedt, where Johnson was captured, is some 15 kilometres SSW of Beverstedt.

A second document giving the exact same crash location as 3.) above also states "In der Luft zerplatzt" - exploded in mid-air. None of these German documents prescribe a cause of loss.

    Cheers

    Rod

Thank you Rod this is very helpful. The RG said local children told the police where he was so this fits with the info you've provided. Much appreciated, Julie
