One other thing - an exhaustive search of the Internet indicates Berlin was never bombed during WW1.

Following were the Indians expats I know enrolled in the UK in Armed Forces in Britain (As opposed to directly serving in the Indian Army)

    Indra Lal Roy RFC (KIA)
    E S C Sen RFC (POW)
    H S Malik RFC
    S C Welingkar RFC (KIA)
    D L Patwardhan RFC/RAF
    H S Kiritikar RFC/RAF
    K A D Naroji (Army)
    A A Rudra (Army)
    Joginder Sen (Army) (KIA)

With the exception of Joginder Sen who died in battle, all others became commissioned officers, or were given a commision before discharge (like Pat and H S Kirtikar)

Of these Patwardhan is the only one whom i can recall who didnt come from an affluent family. I dont have info on Kirtikar. Most of the others were in UK as students at the time of the war.

There may be others .. but we need to find out.

Great find! Good to see a picture of him. (and what a price Literally a steal :)

Let us know what turns up in the book if you get a copy of it? I would have got it if it had been in English (or even Hindi.. Marathi is not my forte!)

There is lot of overlap with Hindi - and I am able to read most of it, but translating it into something i can understand is difficult.

Meanwhile Google Books has several publications with reference to Patwardhan from 1919. They seem to be more grounded to the facts..as excerpts from (!) below show..

    1.
    Indian Review Jan-Dec 1919
    https://books.google.com/books?id=Kz...IVgtkeCh00uQBt

Seems to have a detailed profile from 1919.. unfortunately i can only see snippet views.. some of which are here..

    2. The Modern Review, Volume 26 Ramananda Chatterjee Prabasi Press Private, Limited, 1919

..and here is the complete article. courtesy http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?i...ew=1up;seq=697

Its clear that the Author wrote it based on communication with Patwardhan. and it doesnt get more authentic than this..
