    Default WHITLEY LOSS 24 April 1942 Z9321

On the 24.4.42 Pilot Officer Valentine and his crew returned from ops with an engine loss - ORB states crash landed half a mile from aerodrome - This serial has a couple of internet connections but I can find nothing for 77 Squadron Whitley loss Z9321 other than what is briefly in the ORB.

Can anyone provide anything further on this one please, thanks for looking.

Nothing in Bill Chorley's Bomber Command Losses 1942. There's also nothing mentioned in Z9321's entry in the Air Britain Whitley File - it has Z9321 serving with 102 Sqn, then to 77 Sqn then with 10 O.T.U., and finally S.O.C .August 12th 1944. Maybe it wasn't such a bad crash landing after all?

BCL 1942 does have a P/O E. H. Valentine of 77 Sqn flying Whitley Z9386 on April 27th - hit by flak and ditched 02.50 NE of Kiel. All crew ended up as PoWs, but one crew member was later killed:

Indeed nothing specific to airframe Z9321 and the ORB states crash landed outside the aerodrome so clearly she was put back into service. Maybee if I download the ORB Summary this information will be expanded upon, worth investigating as these circumstances frequently saw the Captain order his crew to jump when close to the aerodrome and he tried to save the aircraft.
