I will try to update this document whenever I have new useful information. I have just received some more excellent information from Allan, and I will be adding it. I'm adding links to individual pages as I find them during my research. If anyone else is doing similar work, they can e-mail me and I will add their findings as well.

Here are a few tips for working with the list.

Most browsers use "ctrl-f" to allow you to search for character strings. I have used a lot of abbreviations, so you are probably better off searching for just the Squadron number. Look for "404", as it might show up as "404 Sqn" or "404 Sdn", or who knows what.

Much of the information is presented in mixed up date sequence. If you find the April 1944 ORB for a unit, the May 1944 ORB could be right in front, right behind, or several dozens of pages away in either direction.

If you find individual pages hard to read, try looking at the first few frames of the next reel. They corrected these photography errors when the detected them.

Many RCAF units underwent names changes over their lives. Usually, the data starts out using the first unit name, and then switches to the new names, which then appear to be out of the (very roughly) alphabetic and numerical order of the reels. There are a few exceptions. Those Home War Establishment Squadrons that went to Europe in 1943/1944 and received 400 series Squadron numbers have their old unit data with the new Squadron number - most of the time. For example, 123 (AC) Squadron records from its beginning are in between 438 and 439 Sdn records (123 Sdn became 439 Squadron on 31 December 1943.)

Finally, some pages are just in the wrong place, totally at random. If you find some of these, let me know and I will ad it to the list.

Please pass my thanks onto Lee for all this hard work. Will make finding the right file mu ch much easier.. All we need now is for someone to index the accident files.. Though from a brief glance they appear to be in Serial number order but are not 100% complete.. Though I did find masses of info on one of my pre-war parachute incidents - Now I know the ORB dates etc I will look at the files again based on the airfield I am interested in for some of my other Canadaian incidents

    Kind Regards

    Paul

The prewar and Second World War accident files are on reels C-5917 to C-5920, plus C-5929 to C-5939, plus T-12353 and T-12357. I'm starting a detailed index, see the link, but would welcome any input you may have.

    Hi Bill & Paul,
I used this as a rough guide:
    http://collectionscanada.gc.ca/pam_a...,189580,180343

It looks like the registrations are organised alphabetically on each reel and the reels organised by Region of registration.

    Paul,
    Stearman CF-AMC is here:
    http://heritage.canadiana.ca/view/oo...29/721?r=0&s=3
Report by Pilot and newspaper clippings of the Accident start at image 760
    Vedette CF-SAE file:
    http://heritage.canadiana.ca/view/oo...12/587?r=0&s=3
You may have to refer to earlier images as the documets for Veddettes CF-SAA to CF-SAE are mixed in together.

    Hope this helps,
    Alan.

The newly founded Department of Transport took over civil aircraft crash investigations some time in the early 1930s, so CF-SAE, and maybe CF-AMC, would not be in RCAF records. The Department of Transport records exist somewhere, but I haven't found them yet. Life is too short.

    Hi Bill,
I searched heritage canadiana for "civil aircraft registration" and at the top of the list was the Department of transport list of 403 reels for Civil Aircraft Registration. The contents relating to any accidents seem good, for example, the detail around the loss of PBY CF-EPX in Scotland filled in a lot of blanks. It doesn't surprise me that the search brings in other reels as I found some Luftwaffe documents in an obscure place while looking for a Canadian Army unit in Scotland.
For those who can read German:
    T-2415 Generalstab der Luftwaffe
    T-2416 Generalstab der Luftwaffe
    T-2417 Luftgaukommando Tunis
    T-2418 Luftwaffe Tripoli
T-2419 Preliminary studies for the Air War History, Issue 8. Reich Air Defense
T-2420 High Command of the Airforce- files relating to Salerno Invasion.
T-2421 Airborne Troops, Aircraft Permitted into Germany, Fuhrer's Orders on Me.262and Ar.354. Request to Fuhrer for Aircraft Allocation
T-2422 Luftwaffe Chief of Air Staff Documents
T-2423 War history of the 1st Fighter Corps from 14th Sept 1943 to 24 Oct 1943
T-2424 War history of the 1st Fighter Corps from 25 Oct 1943 to 21 Jan 1944
    T-3973 Greenland & Iceland-setting up airfields

    Alan.
