    Default 417 Squadron questions

    Hello,
    2 questions for the group:

    1) Gordon Stanley Kimber was lost on July 8, 1944 in Italy. According to the ORB and to the Squadron History he was lost in Spitfire JG337. However, letters after his death from the C.O. note that he was lost in JF748. Which one is correct?

    2) How can I correlate tail letters to serial numbers? I had seen his aircraft referenced as AN-H (and if so I have a picture!) but I have no idea about how to go about checking.

    Sincere thanks again,

    Bob

The ORB lists JF748 as being shot down on 16 June 1944, so I suspect the C.O. may have got his numbers crossed. If someone has access to the RAF record cards for both aircraft it might confirm which one went when.

As for the code letters on either aircraft, the ORB is very short on this info, so your only chance is to find a photo, or perhaps a pilot's log book. Good luck with either.

    G'day

JF748 was shot down by flak near Perugia on 16 June 1944

JG337 AN*X was shot down by flak while Kimber was strafing a vehicle.

    Cheers...Chris
