    Default explanation of target photograph

    Hi,

I found the attached target photo of the raid on Dortmund of 22./23.5.1944. I wonder if there is an expert who can tell me what can be seen on the image and what is written below the photo besides date and target.

    Thanks.

    Marcel

    Hello

I've been able to cross-match some annotations on pictures like Col did, but I'm wondering about the name written on the picture. I have another picture similar to that, can't remember if it was Boulogne-sur-Mer or Cap Gris-Nez, but the name of the captain was clearly matching between the caption and the ORB.

Aircraft individual letter was also clearly marked, after the Squadron number.

In addition, 8'' is the camera lens.

    Joss,

l note with interest that, 1385495 W/O (Pilot) Frederick Arthur MANDER RAFVR, of No.166 Squadron, was lost raiding Aachen on 27/28-5-1944 (BCL5/245). Mander was piloting Lancaster I LL916:AS-X. No.166 Sqn is known to have participated in the attack on Dortmund on 22/23-5-1944, so there is a possibility that the photograph emanated from No.166 Sqn.

    Hi,

Col is correct. Mander is mentioned in the ORB file above the photo. It says:

    Captain: Mander
    Target: Dortmund
    Plotted: 1/2 miles 305
    Heading: 157

I wonder what 1/2 miles 305 means and why there is the difference mentioning the heading, one time it is 157 above the photo and on the photo 180 bearing.

    Any explanation for that?

Thasnks to all for your help.

Addition: Mander was of 166 sqd.

Thanks for the explanation of the text below the photo. What exactly is written there, I mean not the meaning, but the text itself. I still have some difficulties to read it.

So in the end the question is also what 460 means when it is not the squadron. The ORB shows Mander belonging to 166 squadron.
