    Default spitfire floatplane 'Firecat'

I know about trials of the Spitfire floatplanes and have also seen a photograph of the Spitfire 'Firecat' floatplane that was allegedly launched in trials from battle ship Duke of York at the end of WW2. Can any members confirm that there were trials of the Firecat? The Firecat was said to have a central main float and two smaller wing floats opposed to a pair of floats fitted to the Spitfire floatplanes.

Hello Robin, you may already have these references, but the logs of Duke of York are at Kew. July 1945 is ADM 53/121277 and they carry on in order from that number.
Also, I found nothing in the titles of AVIA files indicating that trials took place after 1943.

Thanks Bruce. I have suspicions about the photographs of the Firecat trials from Duke of York as I have never seen such trials documented.

I would expect any such trials to be in AVIA files at Kew, but it is not guaranteed. What is more certain, however, is that any such excitement would be recorded in DoY logs.

    Robin,

Please excuse my scepticsm, but did you find your photo at http://www.strijdbewijs.nl/birds/spi...pitproject.htm ? It includes a couple of photos of the alleged the Firecat, but on reaching the end of the page there is a second link "For all the answers to the questions on this page". That brings up a second page http://www.strijdbewijs.nl/birds/spi.../spitfiles.htm, in which the person who constructed the web-site states all the entries are figments of his imagination.

Couldn't agree more, Robin, the first photo was extremely well done, but the second is very suspicious looking.
