    Default D W Covell & T R Cummins of 466 RAAF

    Dear All
I am still searching for relatives of RAF Sgts Donald Walpole Covell and Thomas Francis Cummins .Both members of 466 RAAF based at Leconfield,Yorkshire July 1943.

They were part of a 5 man crew of Wellington LN288 shot down over Belgium, July 1943.As part of a mission to Aachen. They are buried in a communal grave with the other crew in Chievres, Belgium.
Covell's parents lived in Eltham, London but Cummins home town is not known to me ?

The rest of the crew were -
William A Gunning RAAF [my father's first cousin] the pilot
    Herbert C Jordan RCAF -navigator
    Rex R Feakes RAAF

    Anne,

check out FreeBMD.org.uk, there are perhaps only two England and Wales births of this name for the 1900 to 19300 period, that only two entered in the database now.

The name could be Irish also.

Thers no clues in Gunnings service record? have you gotten the RCAF record of Jordan? TYhere might be some correspondances in that with NOK details however unlikely, have you the RCAF records address?

    Default Covell & Cummins

    Dear Dennis
    Thanks for your suggestions.
I got a long way with Covell's parents then drew a blank. He was most likely an only child so I'd need to look for cousins, if the parents had siblings.

I have Bill Gunning's service records & was kindly given a copy of a letter written by Rex Feakes ,the bombaimer, to his brother in Sydney while he, Rex, was on leave in London. In it he writes of having arrived at the "Aussie" sqdn [466 RAAF] on 23-24/6/43 & a trip to Brighton, with Bill ,"my skipper" to meet up with Bill's ATS girlfriend and how they were all sharing Herb's "smokes" as the people in his Canadian hometown kept him supplied !! Covell & Cummins aren't mentioned but perhaps they went to their hometown on leave ?

I wondered if the 2 RAF men had joined the crew nearer the mission date as 13/14th July '43 was only their fifth mission.

I don't have the RCAF records address.
