    Default Copyright issue

    Hi all,

    Would like some advice please.

Would one need approval from the RAF or London Gazette to use a citation in part or full on a memorial dedicated to that person?

    Any help very much appreciated.

    Kind regards

I dont believe you do as you are not actually reproducing the said item. Obituaries in national newspapers often show parts of citations and I can't see them asking for permission every time they print on obituary. Plus if its for a memorial and they get upset about it then they need to have a long hard look at themselves.

    Regards

    Steve,

If one uses a citation in the way you describe how is the reader to know where it originated - it could be made up? Would it not be better to add in smaller writing at the end "London Gazette; 3 October 1943" - or similar? That way you are acknowledging the origin and there should be no come-back.

Edit. By way of example there is a memorial in Belgium, to a gentleman who was an RAF officer during the war, crediting him with being the man who was responsible for D-day being postponed from 5 to 6 June. The memorial is based on a story the man wrote himself - he had no connection with the forecast and the story is a load of (you fill it in).

    Daz & Brian,

Thank you both, the citations will be those of two VC's and inscribed in all probability in full, and taken from the LG.

Daz, I take your point, we are honouring the courage of these individuals, a poor show if they get all "official".
