Default F/Sgt James William GOWANS, 987869, killed August 27th 1943 Plymouth

    Hello everyone

I'm trying to find the cause of the death of the above Flight Sergeant, who was killed in a flying accident on August 27th 1943 at or near Plymouth.

    I see on ASN:

    http://www.aviation-safety.net/wikib...ki.php?id=1761

that Defiant DR921 of 1623 Flight crashed at Rame Head near Plymouth after hitting a balloon cable on that date, and it gives the name of the pilot as F/Sgt Douglas Herbert HIGGS, 656853, but does not give the winch operator's name. Could Gowans possibly have been the winch operator?

    However, on this site:

    http://www.rafdavidstowmoor.org/cras...943-crash-log/

Its states that a Hawker Henley III of the same unit crashed at Rame Head at 2000 hours.

Could anyone help clear this one up? Were there two incidents?

    Regards

    Simon

    Hello Simon,

With regard to DR921 the 1623 (AAC) Flight ORB states 'night towing aircraft collided with balloon cable, and crashed. Pilot F/Sgt HIGGS and Wireless Operator F/Sgt GOWANS were both killed. Investigation is now in progress.'

    Hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Tim
