    Default Service histories for Hurricane's Z5052, Z5055, Z5057

    Hi all,

I have the Air Britain serials books but they don't give enough info. Does anyone have the service histories on Hurricane IIB's Z5052, Z5055 and Z5057. They all served with 17 Sqn.

    Many thanks,

    Jim

    G'day Jim

Not sure what gen you have but hopefully the following is of some use.

Z5052 was taken on strength with No. 17 (F) Squadron at Dyce in August 1941. It was later shipped to the Soviet Union on the 12th of March, 1942.

    Cheers...Chris

Z5055 came to 17 Squadron 27/7-1941 (together with Z5052) and was shipped to Russia 7/1-1942.

Z5057 came to 17 Squadron 24/8-1941 and was coded YB-T. Shipped to Russia 13/11-1941.

Kenneth Messenger's book Wings over Burma has a photograph of Hurricane YB-T after being pranged in 1942 before the fall of Rangoon. The serial may of course have been reissued and therefore may not have been Z5057 in the photograph.

I don't have a serial for that YB-T, but all the Hurricanes in Burma/Rangoon were serialled in the BDxxx range upwards. A handful of older machines in the Z range were rushed forward to Akyab in the final stages of the campaign, but to 136 Sq. Similarly a few were at Ceylon when the Japanese attacked there, but not the serials listed above.

The system is not allowing me to upload the photograph of Hurricane YB-T from Kenneth Hemmingway's Wings over Burma. The caption reads. "Ricky Chadwick and "Slim" Lewis and Slim's prang. Is Slim browned off?"
