Default British Newspaper Archive now has Illustrated London News upto 1940

    except 1938

I know you need a subscription unless you want to register for '3 free articles' but searching "Aeroplane" and "Crash" throws up some good images

Illustrated London News - Saturday 13 December 1924

    Has a photo of Avro 504 H2458

"SOUTHWARK PARK. An aeroplane accident which might have had terrible results occurred on the morning of December 8. Flying Officer R. (Richard Graham) Chapell, who was flying over South London in an Avro two-seater, had to make a forced landing through engine trouble. He cleverly avoided crowded streets, and made for the open space of Southwark Park, but one of the wings caught some trees, and the machine crashed near the entrance to the Surrey Docks. Happily, the pilot was unhurt. On the playing pitches in the Park a school football match was in progress, with a large number of children looking on"

It's also included as part of the Findmypast.co.uk subscription, which is 9.95 a month rather than the BNA's 12.95 per month. The newspaper archives are useful for finding things like gallantry awards, as the local papers were keen to report them and the details behind them during the war.

    Hello,

Our local library, The Victorian State Library (Australia), is very progressive. You can view the complete Illustrated London News 1842-2003, with extended search facilities, for free! Only catch, you need to be a registered (and resident of Victoria) member of the library.

Paul, Slightly misleading. The article/photo you mention (Avro 504K H2458). There is not a serial in sight!
