    Default 151 Sqn loss 17/11/41

    On this date Sgt JJ Lammin of 151 Sqn was posted MIA. Whilst 151 Sqn were based at Wittering, I believe Sgt Lammin was lost whilst he was temporarily forward deployed to Coltishall;

    Can anyone confirm the following;

    Was he a Pilot or AG
    The identity of his Defiant
    The identity of the other crewman
    The reason for his loss

    Thanks in advance

    Tony

    Hi
    Sgt LAMMIN, JOSEPH JOHN
    Service No:1375987
    http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1803005/
    Date of Death:17/11/1941
    Age:26
    Regiment/Service:Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 151 Sqdn.
    Panel Reference: Panel 47. Memorial:RUNNYMEDE MEMORIALAdditional Information:Son of James Paul and Catherine Lammin, of Canning Town, Essex;
    husband of Doris Kathleen Lammin, of Canning Town.

    http://www.151squadron.org.uk/
    151 Squadron RAF
    Being equipped with both Hurricanes and Defiants the Squadron split up into three flights, two of Defiants and one of Hurricanes, the idea being to prove that “the Hurricane was a better night fighter aircraft than the Defiant”.

    November 17. 1941
    Sgt Lammin was reported missing with no details available. ("Apparently flight from Coltishal") His loss meant that the Squadron had lost four of their aircrew in a month of relatively minimal air activity.
    The weather was showing its usual deterioration as winter began to make its appearance, and this factor must have been partly responsible for a let up in enemy air activity. Even so, Turbinlight co-operation exercises and the usual training programme integrated into standing patrols were maintained.

    Sgt LAMMIN, JOSEPH JOHN Service No:1375987 apparently pilot Hurricane!

    Sgt Lammin was an Air Gunner.

    He baled out of Defiant AA424 some 25 miles off the coast after it suffered engine failure.

    Hi
    The pilot is unknown?
    CYPRUS
    CRAMP, John Robins - F/O (Pilot) - probably killed whilst flying in Defiant II, AA424 of No 79 OTU, which dived into the ground on take off after becoming inverted in a turn.

    Yes the pilot is known.

    I did not say the aircraft was lost.

    Many thanks for the info - to clarify that the Gunner was Lammin (who baled out as described) and despite engine problems the aircraft (AA424) made it back to Colt?

    Was Cramp the Pilot on this flight? (as well as the flight mentioned at #4 above?

    Kind Regards

    Tony,

    Yes the details I posted are correct, no Cramp has nothing to do with the events 17/11/41.

    You need to clear down your PM box before I can reply to the PM you sent.
