Default Bio information sought: George Barwell DFC

This officer has been discussed before ...

... but I am hoping someone might look at the subject with fresh eyes. I am especially interested in his rapid rise through the ranks, but anything would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Bruce

    Good morning Peter,
The ARTILLERY INVESTMENTS LIMITED reference is news to me, so there is still work to do. Many thanks for that.

    Bruce,
Yr man was the only RAF (an A/Sqn Ldr) on the Ploesti raid (see The Times (London, England), Friday, Aug 13, 1943; pg. 8; Issue 49623.). This may have something to do with his rapid promotion.

    Hi Peter,
It looks like the period before the raid may be a bit confused in the various records. His DFC was awarded before the Tidal Wave operation while with 160 Squadron in the Middle East. This time is a blank to me. Also, there is a reference to him having been on 'both the Ploesti and Rome raids' and in context this reads as being in the gunnery role on both these 9th Air Force missions.

    Regards,
    Bruce

BARWELL, George Charles, F/L (111243, RAFVR*) - unit ? - Officer, Legion of Merit (United States) - awarded as per London Gazette dated 15 March 1946. Public Record Office Air 2/8973 indicates this was recommended “in connection with operations of the 9th Bomber Command against Ploesti.”
