Default F86 Sabre procurement for the RAF 1952

Good morning .... back in January 2014 I posted an enquiry regarding my brother (then) F./Lt. F.M. Hegarty, who spent the best part of a year with the Joint Services Mission in the USA, and was subsequently awarded a Bar to his AFC in 1954.

I have recently learned that, during the negotiations for the procurement of the F86 Sabre he was one of 3 test pilots involved in the trials - the others being one American and one Canadian pilot.

I wonder if someone out there knows anything more about what happened back then? I have tried the National Archives, but, unless I am looking in the wrong place, there doesn`t seem to be anything relevant. I have never been able to trace the recommendation for the Bar - the London Gazette gives only the bald announcement of the award.

All suggestions will be gratefully received.

    Hello JeanB,
Are you looking for information on the contract negotiations or the aircraft evaluation process? Or something else?

    Regards,
    Bruce

Hallo Bruce, and thanks for the rapid response! I am looking for the connection between the involvement Frank had with the Sabre project and the subsequent award of the Bar to his AFC. I am fairly confident that the two things are connected, and would very much like to know more.

    Does this help? Regards Jean

    Thanks Jean,
I think I can point you to a few files in Kew that cover the evaluation of the Sabre (such as AVIA 18/4280) which are likely to contain reports or summaries of reports about the flight testing program carried out by AAEE. I will compile the list and send it later.
There are others on this board that are good at finding their way through the awards records, but hopefully we can open up the subject of the work he did.

    HTH,
    Regards,
    Bruce

    Jean,

There is a great deal of information on the RAF procurement of Canadian built Sabres in Larry Millberry's great book, "The Canadair Sabre". Should still be available from the publisher, look at http://www.canavbooks.com/publications/CanadairSabre/ .

Your brother is mentioned on page 275 of the book, as CO of 112 Squadron 1953 to 1955, during which time they operated Vampires and Sabres.

Some info on individual RAF aircraft on my web pages, starting at http://www.rwrwalker.ca/RCAF_19451_19500_detailed.htm .

Hallo again Bruce. Your mail has arrived, and I shall now start browsing - I am so grateful for all the references which certainly appear on the surface to be exactly what I have been looking for. Never fear, I shall keep you informed. May be quiet for a few days whilst I work my way through the maze!

    All the best Jean

Thanks Bill for your interest and your suggestions. I do have a copy of Duncan Curtis` book on the Sabre, and I also have quite a lot of information about my brother`s time as CO of 112 squadron, but every additional fact is grist to my mill, so thanks for the link to your website - very informative.

    Best regards Jean
