Default F.A.A. Martinet crash-landing, Orkney, 771 (Fleet Requirements) Squadron, 1942(?)

    Hello everyone

Long shot this one, but can anyone ID a Martinet of 771 (Fleet Requirements) Squadron, F.A.A. based at H.M.S. Tern in the Orkneys that crash-landed in a field after an engine failure due to coolant leak. The pilot was Sub-Lt William Fenwick-Smith. Apparently he had told his drogue operator to put on his parachute just in case, but unbeknownst to the pilot he promptly baled out over Scapa Flow and had to be picked by by a Royal Navy destroyer. Fenwick-Smith was pretty surpised to find him missing when he crash-landed!

No date, but I'm guessing 1942 - sorry I can't be more specific.

    Regards

    Simon

Thanks Jim. As I said, it's a long shot, but the long shots oftern come up trumps on this Forum!

We're doing fine, hope all's well with everyone at your end too!

    Cheers
