Default Three More Met Branch Officers About Whom Little Is Known

    Hello All,

Three more of my Single Entry RAFVR Met Branch Officers. As with the previous lot, no hurry for replies - just put a mental 'sticky' on yr computer screens!!

Douglas Neill Harrison (spelling of 2nd forename checked correct)
    Born 26 Jul 1901 Salisbury 5a 160
    Cmd Sqn Ldr RAFVR(Met Branch) (142734) 1 Mar 44
    Died Q4 1987 Barnet 1087 11 201

    Thomas William Vernon Jones
    Born 17 Oct 1902 Wandsworth 1d 616
    Cmd Sqn Ldr RAFVR(Met Branch) (184233) 11 Sep 1944
Award MiD as A/Wg Cdr 1 Jan 1946
    Died Q4 1986 Brent 1086 11 459
[I think that when he came across me in the Met Office – post-war - he was known as T W Vernon-Jones?]

    D M McIntosh
Located as Sqn Ldr S Met O at HQ 231 Gp in Jun 1945
[I found him in the depths of Malcolm’s RAFWEB, but not been able to find his Forenames, or his Service Number/Commissioning details. It is possible, I suppose, that the 231 Gp S Met O post was (at that time) held by a non-Met Branch officer? But we might well be into the realms of fantasy? 231 (Bomber) Gp only in existence 13 Dec 1943 to 30 Sep 1945.].

    TIA

As per the actor USAF Major rodeo riding the A-Bomb - Slim Pickings for these gents.

None in the May 1939 CAFL suggesting all had left the Met Civil Office or RAF employ by that date.

T W V Jones is listed in the Jan 1937 AFL as AM Met Office Technical Officer - post nominals of the period are "Esq. B.Sc." In post April 1937 AFL. He did not appear in the July 1936 AFL so look for appointment from mid to end 1936.

By June 1938 AFL he has left the AFL records.

However in the June 1938 D N Harrison has appeared as a Technical Officer - his post nominal is of note "D. Phil." Last listed in position April 1939 AFL

Nothing for D M McIntosh so unlikely Met employed before outbreak of war.

    T W V Jones

His record is scratchy to say the least, but the following comes from the Met Office Annual Reports 1930-1935:
    1929-1932 - Croydon Airport
    1932- 1934 - Hinaidi (Iraq)
    1935- ? - Met Office HQ, London

In 1939 he appears to have been attached to the Admiralty as his address is given as Naval Meteorology, Hydrographic Department, Admiralty, in the Members List of the Royal Met Society.

During the 1960s he published a couple of articles about horticulture in the same magazine.

Slight thread drift but I think that the met boys will forgive.

Noticed some of the potted history dates from Brian did not agree with the AFL dates.

This is the between the wars list of positions filled in the Air Ministry for Met Office.

It's in alpha order and lists the AFL I have immediate access to. Consider it periodic snapshots of who is listed for each AFL given.

Use cut and paste to regenerate the spreadheet, NFT is "no XXXing trace" and depending on era Superintendent is Principal Technical Officer (the AFL does not define)

Thank you, Ross, I only have the AFL for 1938-45.

I was really trying to provide a potted history of the type of work in which the individuals were engaged, without going into too much detail. If they do not appear in the AFL it is probably because they were working at a non-AM location. Harrison, for example did not work at a RAF station apart from a short period circa 1938/9; the rest of the time he was at civil or Army locations.

During the inter-war years the names of all staff of Junior Professional Assistant, or above, were listed in the Met Office Annual Reports; unfortunately the documents are not available on-line. As of 1939 there were so many personnel in the list that it became impractical to continue the practice .

I've used the ARs to amend Harrison's record as I have the reports for 1931-1935.

    Peter,

I hope you're well - I was in your part of the world earlier this evening, delivering a few thousand tonnes of aggregate to a worksite between Reading and Basingstoke :)

Your man Jones - something is ringing bells in my head that he was at Hemswell in late '44? I could be getting very confused of course, but a former 170 Sqn RG, who lives by me, has mentioned a Thomas Jones up at Hemswell. He remembers him because he was another Taff, albeit a well-spoken one. I'm seeing him for a couple of pints on Thursday lunchtime - I'll ask him. I note that what I'm saying is contra to what has been posted further up this thread in relation to his appearances in the AFL...

    More to follow :)

    All the very best,

    Greg

    Hello All,

Mni tks for all the responses, and the large amount of data. Will take some time to digest it all, and to put it in the right places in my s/sheet.

Just one last request (then I'll leave you in peace!).

Albert Walters was Cmd Sqn Ldr RAFVR (Met Branch) (140464) on 11 Sep 1944. He had an enormous amount of 'previous'! Not the least of which was being Cmd from Flt Sgt to 2Lt (RFC) and then to Lt (RAF) 7 Jun 1918!! Does anybody know his Enlisted Service Number? (at my current BT download speed it will take a day to download the relevant AIR 78 file!).

And as an afterthought, when I was nobbut an under-minion in the Met Off I worked with a number of the guys we've been dealing with. Some of 'em were getting on a bit. They used to be a bit tetchy at the back-end of a night shift in a forecast office. None of my immediate supervisors (who'd also, mostly, been in uniform in WW2!!) thought to tell me what these guys had been through! And I was too callow a youth to think, and ask, about it!

    Tks again

    More on T W V Jones:

S Met O Aden circa October 1940 - circa June 1943 (as a civilian to about Feb 1942, then Wing Commander from about Feb))
    S Met O Coastal Command July 1943 - at least July 1945

(Source AFL - or is it CAFL?))
