Default What maintenance Units where on Malta during ww2?

    Hi,

I am trying to work out what unit someone could have belonged to, at first I thought it could be 137MU, but I realise that this was not formed until 1942, in the middle east, and the serviceman I am researching was already on Malta in 1941. Any help appreciated.

    Cheers

I have worked out that 110MU and 143MU were also on Malta, from 1942 and 1943 as well as 137MU. But can seem to place what was there beforehand. Came across the term Advanced Service depot, and mobile repair. Would they be likely names for units, or would they all be called "MU"?

    GreenBean, Hi

I note that Wiki (E&OE!) states that there was an RAF Equipment Depot formed at Hamrun, Malta, in 1942. Many MUs were originally Aircraft Servicing Units, or Equipment Depots. I cannot find any RAF Hamrun. But the Malta Branch of RAFA meets at the Hamrun Civic Club, Anton Buttigieg Street, Hamrun, Malta, HMR 2051. If these guys donít know then you could be in some difficulty!! Drop the RAFA Branch Sec a line Ė you might get lucky!!

    Hi Peter,

Super reply I will drop them a line. Thanks
In the inspection book I have he says he is at A.R.S Kalafrana, from 22.10.41. I know Kalafrana was a seaplane and search rescue base. I wonder if ARS means anything, or did he simply mean Air and Sea Rescue? and got the letters the wrong way round.

    Thanks

    Stuart,
ARS might well = Aircraft Repair Section? Hamrun and Kalafrana are only 5 miles apart (But, then, nowhere on Malta is very far from anywhere else!! Except when I was there the Maltese drivers could give you nightmares!!!). You need yr man's Service Record. That will tell you the Where(Unit) and the When.

    Hi,

I have got a copy of my Grandfathers service records, there are four documents, scroll down to the fourth being relevant to his time on Malta. Any help gratefully received on what unit he was part of? And any other interesting bits that come from it.

So his record on Malta reads:

Malta 15/9/41 (I think he came in on the Halberd convoy)
    admitted 45 Gen hosp 4.4.42
    discharged 45 Gen hosp 10.4.42
    adm 54 gh
    disc 45 gh 14.6.42
    Stn Kalafrana
    Takali A 15.9.42
    STN Kalafrana 20/9/42
    Workshops Gzira A 20/9/42
    STN Kalafrana
    45 Gen Hosp 21.8.42
    Heliopolus 24.1.42
    HE
    141 AFHQ 9/2/44
    6069 SE 2/5/44
    STN Mawgan 29/8/44
    4187 SE
    102 PDC

Where I am looking to understand is what Unit he was in, and why this record does not tally with his actual record of where he serviced aircraft on Malta? The dates all seem wrong. Any help would be very gratefully received.

The majority of planes he worked on belong to 249 Sq, but he all ways writes of work carried out by the Sqd personnel.

    Greenbean, Hi,

Try these below and see if they fit?:-

    Malta 15/9/41
Heliopolus 24.1.42 Heliopolis was in the Canal Zone, Egypt??
    admitted 45 Gen hosp* 4.4.42
    discharged 45 Gen hosp 10.4.42
adm 54 gh - typo(?), should be 45 Gen Hosp(?)
    disc 45 gh 14.6.42 Discharged
Stn Kalafrana Posted on to the strength of RAF Kalafrana
Takali A 15.9.42 Attached to RAF Takali from Kalafrana
STN Kalafrana 20/9/42 Returned to Kalafrana
Workshops Gzira A 20/9/42 Attached to W/shps Gzira from Kalafrana
STN Kalafrana Returned to Kalafrana (date?)
45 Gen Hosp 21.8.42 Admitted 45 Gen Hosp
    HE Home Establishment???
    141 AFHQ 9/2/44
    6069 SE 2/5/44 6069 Servicing Echelon
STN Mawgan 29/8/44 Posted to RAF St Mawgan
    4187 SE 4187 Servicing Echelon
102 PDC 102 Personnel Dispersal(?) Centre (at Cardington)

    * 45 British General Hospital was in Malta from Jun 1941 to Mar 1944 (source www.scarletfinders.co.uk).

Others on this forum may be able to provide the 'missing' bits (or correct my attempts).

If Heliopolus cannot be identified as somewhere in Malta, but is the Egyptian Heliopolis, then I suspect the date is a misprint for January 1943 not 1942. Or possibly 1944? Either way, there seems to have been a gap for 1943.
