    Hi Derek,

From a previous thread on this forum it looks like your grandfather was serving with No2809 Light Anti-Aircraft Squadron of the RAF Regiment when he died.

    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...men-01-07-1945

From a bit of searching of the London Gazette it looks like he was commissioned as a Pilot Officer (on probation) in March 1943 (Gazette publication date 23/3/43). He previously held the rank of Leading Aircraftman and his original service number prior to being commissioned was 1554998 which I think infers he joined the RAF in May 1941 in Edinburgh.

    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/.../1368/data.pdf

He was promoted to Flying Officer (on probation) on 23/7/43 with the notice of his promotion being published on 13/8/43.

Although the Operations Record Book for 2809 Sqn has not been digitised you could possibly order a copy from the National Archives or get one of the professional researchers to look at it / copy it for you. The document is AIR29/102 and it may contain some references to your Grandfather.

Hope this may be of some help. J

The best thing to do would be to order his service file from the RAF if you have not done so already, the Veterans agency website gives directions on how to do so.

If you google search for Henderson 137871
we discussed him before very briefly on the forum
    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...men-01-07-1945

If also will bring you to two results in the London Gazette which direct you to the fact that he was in the RAF Regiment and thus not a flying member of the force. he was an anti aircraft soldier as it turns out.
The four digit Squadron number mentioned in the above link tell you this also,

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/.../1368/data.pdf this is his record of commission as an officer
    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/.../3638/data.pdf

If your in or near Kew you can view the Squadron records in teh National Archives:
