    Default F/S David Alfred Thomas Owen - 1162799 - Died 2/4/42 - 500 Sqd

    Hi again,

    Can somebody supply me with information about the above airman:

    Base;

    Aircraft Flown;

    Serial No and Code;

    Possible Crash site.

    Members, I'm sorry if my requests seem too repetitive and frequent but being new in researching RAF matters this seems to be my only option at the moment.

    Cheers.

    Steve.

    500 Squadron were operating Lockhead Hudsons at the time of the loss.
    I have found 4 members of 500 Sqn on the CWGC site that lost their life on 2.4.42.
    Sgt Brennan
    Sgt Carter
    Sgt Davey
    F/Sgt Owen
    All are on the runnymede memorial.
    Air Britain RAF Aircraft have Hudson V AM659 with 500 Sqn when it ran out of fuel on return from patrol on 2.4.42. However AB state that the aircraft was ditched off the Algerian coast.
    At this time the squadron was based at Stornoway.

    AM659, MK-A

    AB reference to Algeria is incorrect

    Failed to return due to navigation error and fuel shortage. At 19:50 hrs the aircraft signalled that it was 90 miles from base and had fuel for 45 minutes. Last heard sending SOS at 21:19 hrs. F/Sgt Owen and his crew are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

    The Horeb Chapel in Treherbert, Glamorgan has a plaque for Davies which refers to him as Elfed - as the family knew him.

    He was trained as a pilot in Southern Rhodesia and he returned to the UK via the United States.

    The aircraft was delivered to Stornoway from Bircham Newton on 25 March 1942.

    Malcolm
