Exact Brian, I read too fast, the plane never landed at Portreath.

Yes it will be interesting to know just what went on that day, perhaps if someone has or had contact with Ambus more of this story will evolve, but a bit of a long shot. The PoW report would make interesting reading wonder if Joss has a copy ?

    Hello

In reply to your e-mail, if the PoW questionnaire exists and has been correctly filed, it should be found in WO 344/6/2 which covers ALTREE A to ANDERSON D.

I was experimenting with the LG search facility, and used Hillan as one of my ‘targets’! He is not on the usual England & Wales BMD sites (CWGC seems to indicate his Birth was Reg in Scotland?). However, he appears in the LG for 9 Sep 38 p.5749:-

    August .15, 1938.
    AFTER OPEN COMPETITION.
    Clerical Class,
    Ian Rutherford Hillan

Which indicates that he had been successful in the Clerical Officer competition in 1938 (he could only have been 16, or 17?). And, on the same date but p.5766 he is posted to Air Ministry.

    III.—ASSIGNMENTS TO THE CLERICAL CLASS.
    Air Ministry
    Ian Rutherford Hillan

    He next appears on:-

    22nd Apr. 1943.
    1293492
[Enlisted Apr/May 1940 aged 18] Flt Sgt Ian Rutherford HILLAN Cmd Plt Off(p) (144795).

I simply make you aware of this for what it is worth

A bit of information - he is on a family tree on ancestry.co.uk, which gives his birth as 1921, registered in Glasgow, as per the CWGC website.

However, on the Scotland's People website, there is a John Rutherford Hillan, born Partick, 1921. No details of parents as the file hasn't been digitised.

    Regards

    Simon

I now have a copy of F/O Abraham Ambus’s (144797) PoW report made after his release but sadly this does not reveal any further details of the events leading to his capture.

    Details contained,

DoB: September 6, 1907 - making him 35 at time of capture.

Employed as a rep in advertising prior to joining up.

    Home address Newport.

Joined RAF August 1940 (attestation), May 1941

Place of capture Dieppe and had been slightly wounded.

Interrogation: Dulag Luft June 2, 1943 to June 25, 1943. Solitary confinement. Interrogated by various Technical / Officers. Food bread and half bowl of potato soup.
Main PoW camps: Stalag Luft III Sagan June 27, 1943 to January 31, 1945
Stalag Luft III Nurmberg February 6, 1945 to April 19, 1945

A little more but still not the complete story !

    Default Ian R Hillan Background

I have recently discovered this site and wanted to update/clarify details about my uncle Ian Rutherford Hillan. His identical twin, Hugh, is my father (died a couple of years ago). They were born in Partick Glasgow in November 1921. I am also called Ian Hillan (but not Rutherford).

What I have to add is "family word of mouth" rather than factual - so there may be inaccuracies but Ian/Hugh's mother believed that it is accurate as did my father who also served in the RAF on the ground. I am not familiar with ranks and roles so am using the term Navigator but it might well be F/O Ambus

Ian had completed his 30 missions and was to begin training pilots, but as a pilot was ill he volunteered to fly this mission. I understand that there was an inexperienced Navigator on the flight, who took them off course. The plane was hit and Ian stayed at the controls to allow the crew to bail out. Sadly, like so many fine young men, he died.

I have further biographical information but can't add much about Ians service.
